HOW IT ALL STARTED
• Thatch Master started in June 2004, on a hotel project on Cerf island after 6 years working for a reputed thatch contractor.
• Apart from acquiring site experienced, observing discipline learning leaves cultivation, drying and preparation to size, quickly mastered the logistics of thatching from the ‘OLD BOYS’ who were the only ones who knew how to perform this grateful craft and above all else they were very well respected.
• This gave me a sense of great belief, pride and passion to learn more, engage myself to promote and develop this artisanal trade that was quickly disappearing.
THE EXPERIENCE
Over the years, we gained the required knowledge to bring valuable and visible improvement in the manner the ‘OLD BOYS’ used to thatch with latanier leaves namely:
• Improving the lifespan of thatch mattress.
• Introducing the nylon netting to secure the leaves mattress.
• Providing peace of mind and giving more value for money to our customers.
• Restoring confidence in the trade for private individual to large resorts/hotels.

THE FUTURE OF TRADITIONAL THATCH
This Traditional natural roof type is unique to the Seychelles. Its existence spams all the way from our colonial days, when the scattered group of islands were first discovered by Christophe Columbus in 1770.
It is greatly appreciated by visitors and Seychellois alike, as it showcases our Creole Culture and Heritage.
But History will witness as the natural latanier leaves thatch has survived, its existence over past years, and now as technology captures human imagination, it cannot answer all of its critics namely:
• Constant Maintenance
• Prone to Fire – High Risk
• Exorbitant insurance premiums
• Limited lifespan
• Limited availability of raw materials
• Thatcher’s – unviability of skilled artisan
THE WAY FORWARD: SYNTHETIC THATCH
Thatch Master is a strong enough brand to survive the future, but it must innovate to do so, thus searching for a viable replacement is obvious and necessary.
